It's a Sun Kraft! |
|

I'm starting to dip my toe in the water of the big wide world of lighting and am coming up with some pretty wild and fun stuff. You've probably seen some of my surveyor's tripod lamps and although they are cool, Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn are doing them too, so it's time to step it up and out of the box.
Enter the Sun Kraft! These sun lamps were a staple in the the 1940's as used to help "men, women and children achieve the health benefits of ultraviolet light".Check out this video from 1946 explaining the invention of the Sun Kraft. I especially love how the inventor is smoking a cigarette and drinking his milk at the beginning...
Anyhoo, I really like the lines of this guy and decided to make a desk lamp out of one I found at the Alameda. Jack Farris, lamp guru put it together for me and even made the timer dial a dimmer. It is one sweet ride.Check out the duel cords wrapping up the side. Love.

Conveyor Belt Foundry Molds Wall Art |
|

Many of you know that I was fortunate to come upon a foundry mold BONANZA and I gotta tell you, I am having a great time creating things with them! I will be posting a couple projects over the coming week so you can see what I come up with.
These cool things are foundry molds for conveyor belts. The one in the center is a whopping 54" (the ruler on the right will help give perspective). Foundry molds were hand-made by craftsmen in the early days of the industrial revolution. The workmanship is just amazing and they are absolute works of art. .

Faucet Knob Table |
|

I've made quite a few of these and they always get a lot of second looks. Here's a snap of one I made and we sold at the 3 Speckled Hens show last fall. A lot of patience goes into laying them out and a lot of elbow grease goes into taking all the knobs off at the junkyard but I love how each one is different based on the base & knobs I use.

Letterpress Type Spacer Wall Art |
|

Here’s a wall hanging I made using vintage wood letterpress type spacers, which were the pieces of wood the printers would use to separate the pieces of type when printing billboards and circus posters 30-40 years ago. It measures about 3’ high by 2’ wide and has the most wonderful blue/red patina. They come in different lengths and widths and I set them in place just like you would tile. This piece took about 8 hours to create.
The fun part about working with the spacers and type is seeing how the colors come out after multiple applications of Briwax paste wax and a lot of elbow grease. A true labor of love but so worth it.

Here's a full shot of it in our booth at the Celebration of Craftswomen show.
